Elephants - a little bit closer than expected

Apologies for the elephant being out of focus but at 10 feet away he was a little bit closer than I expected! We had about 20 minutes warning that a group of six elephants were about to walk through our remote campsite in Kaokoland in northern Namibia but we had no idea they would pass quite this close. They took a good half hour to make their way through. Annemarie up in the roof tent grabbing shots and me hiding behind a tree. The amazing thing is how softly they move through the sand. You would expect noise but unless they are breaking of branches you just don't hear their approach. Very easy to have one behind you without knowing it or to have another suddenly emerge from behind a bush. In this scattered scrub that can be dangerous if they come to believe you are blocking their way. Best to make sure they, and you, have a very clear way of escape.
